Els Bruggeman
Group Manager Advocacy, Enforcement & Communication
Euroconsumers and its member organisations in Belgium, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Poland welcome the European Commission’s initiative for an Action Plan on Fighting Online Fraud. Scams cost consumers and businesses billions of euros each year, harming not only victims but Europe’s economy and competitiveness, as fraudsters exploit every weak link in the “scam chain” across platforms, payment systems and communication channels. Euroconsumers’ surveys show that 74% of consumers see tackling online financial scams as a top priority, and 4 in 5 have encountered a scam online. Drawing on its research, frontline work with victims and collaboration with the Global Anti-Scam Alliance, Euroconsumers sets out recommendations on victim support and protection, platform accountability for fraudulent advertising, and better coordination between stakeholders.
