Euroconsumers is very pleased to host a panel on the first day of the conference on: READY FOR THE NEXT “DIESELGATE” IN DATA PROTECTION: THE NEW REALITY OF COLLECTIVE REDRESS IN THE EU. 27th January 2021 – 10.30am CET
As a world-leading IT multidisciplinary conference, the CPDP – Computer, Privacy and Data Protection – provides guidance in legal, regulatory, academic and technological developments in privacy and data protection. The CPDP conference gathers academics, lawyers, practitioners, policy-makers, industry and civil society from all over the world, providing an arena to exchange ideas and discuss the latest emerging issues and trends. CPDP is one of the leading data protection and privacy conferences in Europe and around the world.
In 2020, the EU adopted a new law on collective redress, which allows consumers to present jointly a court case to seek compensation for damages which arise from the same source. At Euroconsumers, we have advocated for such an EU-wide collective redress scheme for many years. We have been pioneers in this area, for example coordinating four class actions in Spain, Portugal, Italy and Belgium against Facebook in 2018.
At last, the possibility for consumers to claim collective redress for damages in the data protection arena is becoming a reality across the EU. What does this mean for consumers? How will this new collective redress instrument be designed? How will compensation for breaches of privacy rights be defined?
In our panel we will discuss the key elements of the new EU directive, as well as the aspirations , benefits and outcomes for consumers, specifically in the area of data protection.
