About this Webinar
When it comes to online protection, teenagers can feel that the whole world is talking about them but not to them.
Policy-makers have been busy recently: the European Parliament has backed a 16+ age limit for social media, and individual EU countries are planning to follow Australia’s example of restricting access for minors.
But sometimes a well-intentioned, simple solution like these can miss the mark. A blanket-ban can cut young people off from connection and creativity, and relieve platforms of their responsibility to building safe environments for younger users.
Next up is the Digital Fairness Act which intends to fill any gaps in the EU’s digital policy system that could leave young people vulnerable. Taking into account the existing EU digital rule book, this initiative aims to tackle problematic practices such as: unfair commercial practices related to dark patterns; misleading marketing by influencers; addictive design of digital products like video games and unfair personalisation practices.
Young people should be empowered to shape their own digital experience, and as the Digital Fairness Act takes shape, Euroconsumers has joined with the European Youth Press for January’s Start Talking webinar to give the floor to young voices across Europe, inviting them to share what they really think about these issues.
