Day 3: Fair Digital Finance Forum

Belgium – 16  March 2022 – On day three of the Fair Digital Finance Forum (a week of events to mark World Consumer Rights Day) Euroconsumers’ Belgian member Test-Achats/Test-Aankoop will be highlighting the unsettling and costly problem of phishing.

Phishing is defined as the fraudulent practice of sending emails purporting to be from reputable companies or persons in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers. As digital finance becomes more and more important in our day to day lives, it is vital that consumers can have confidence in managing their finances online. Phishing destroys that confidence, leaving consumers shaken and out of pocket.

Throughout the day Test-Achats/Test-Aankoop will be promoting their campaign against phishing, and on financial institutions’ -such as banks – unwillingness to compensate victims of phishing. Victims of phishing are too often left to the discretion of financial institutions’ willingness to reimburse them. That’s why Test Achats/Test-Aankoop will support some consumers in starting a legal action to obtain compensation for the funds lost. Digital financial services offer great opportunities for consumers to master their own finances, but if it is not safe, it is not going to happen. Innovation and consumer protection go hand in hand.
