Here the winners of the 2021 My Data is Mine Award at the Web Summit in Lisbon, the biggest technology conference in the world. Congratulations to Pietro Dunn and Giovanni De Gregorio, and to runner-up Machi Tsokos.
Euroconsumers is delighted to announce that the winners of the 2021 My Data Is Mine Award are Pietro Dunn and Giovanni De Gregorio! The runner-up is Machi Tsokos. Congratulations to all.
Both Mr Dunn and Mr De Gregorio have been awarded a prize of €1,000 euros in total, and invited to present their paper during a ceremony at the 2021 Web Summit in Lisbon.
The Web Summit is the largest tech event in the world, where CEOs, members of the Fortune 500, as well as founders of start-ups from all over the world count among the participants.
The My Data is Mine Award recognises young scholars who can offer a visionary contribution to data privacy in Europe and worldwide. The call for papers was aimed at exploring the best opportunities, from a regulatory and technological point of view, to build a digital environment that maximizes benefits for consumers in terms of safeguarding and enhancing individual privacy while still allowing society to unlock the immense benefits that can be obtained from the increased use and study of data.
Mr Dunn and Mr de Gregorio’s paper concerns data profiling of consumers and citizens, and argues the regulatory strategy adopted by the EU with respect to profiling is largely based on a risk-based approach. This approach is to balance the safeguarding of fundamental rights, including data protection, whilst avoiding creating a legal framework that is overly burdensome and stifles the opportunities of data.
Ms Tsokos’ paper concerns the EU regulation of Artificial Intelligence, and advocates for a more human rights focused regulatory approach, to complement the technology neutral approach used by EU regulators thus far.
